For example, did you know that some adults have one foot that’s slightly larger than the other, or that many people aren’t aware that they actually require a wide-width shoe? Because our feet are three-dimensional, traditional measuring tools (such as the Brannock device®) can only give you an approximation of your true shoe size. You also have to keep in mind the style that you’re shopping for – while you may find dressy shoes run tight or small, a sneaker or casual oxford may be on the loose side. The same applies for the shoe’s material – synthetic leather materials have less ‘give’, while leather can be broken in and conform to your foot after repeated wear. What’s more, each manufacturer use different methods of constructing their shoes, resulting in slight variations in size.

HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR US, UK, OR EUROPEAN SHOE SIZE: A GUIDE FOR MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN:

Be sure to have the socks, stockings or hosiery on that you plan to wear with your shoes.

Next, use a ruler or tape measure to measure your foot, from the heel to the very tip of your longest toe.

Using the charts on this page, convert your inches measurement to your US or Euro shoe size. You may use this conversion chart when ordering European brands.Find the closest measurement (in inches) that is equivalent to or greater than the length of your foot. For example, a man whose foot measures 11 ¼ inches is a US 12, a UK 12, or a European 47.

SOME ADDITIONAL HELPFUL HINTS:

ACCURACY IS EVERYTHING:

When measuring, you can ensure a more accurate reading by shifting your weight forward and flattening your foot.

HALF-SIZES: If your measurement is between two sizes, always move up to the larger size; otherwise you risk the chance of the shoe being too snug.

DOUBLE CHECK: Be certain to measure both feet. As we pointed out earlier, many people have two different-sized feet. Tip: fit to the larger of the two.

TIME OF DAY: You’ll have the best results if you fit yourself at a similar time as when you will be wearing the shoes. This rule especially applies to daily footwear: we suggest fitting yourself when you've been on your feet all day, as your feet have expanded; therefore you will get the most accurate measurement and fitting.
